It honestly feels a little weird to finally say this, but Grand Theft Auto 6 is actually coming this year. After years of waiting, trailers, rumors, delays, and endless speculation, Rockstar has now set the release date for November 19, 2026. The game will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
And from everything Rockstar has shown so far, GTA 6 looks absolutely massive.
Welcome Back to Vice City
GTA 6 takes us back to Vice City, but this isn’t simply a remake of the city from the 2002 game. Vice City is now part of a much larger state called Leonida, which is Rockstar’s fictional take on Florida.
The setting has pretty much everything you’d expect from a Florida-inspired GTA game: huge beaches, flashy nightlife, swamps, highways, small towns, islands, boats, wildlife and, of course, plenty of people doing questionable things.
Rockstar has officially shown several different areas outside the main city, including Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga National Park. So while Vice City is obviously going to be a major part of the game, there should be a lot more to explore once you start heading outside the city.
The map also looks like it’s going to make much better use of the water than previous GTA games. There are boats, islands and coastal areas all over the place, which should make simply driving around the map feel pretty different from GTA V.
Meet Jason and Lucia
The two main characters are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and this is one of the biggest changes from previous GTA games.
Jason grew up around criminals and eventually ended up working with local drug runners in the Keys. Lucia has had a much rougher road, including time in Leonida Penitentiary. The two meet and become partners, both in crime and in their attempt to build a better life.
Rockstar has described the story as one involving a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida, with Jason and Lucia having to rely on each other after a job goes badly.
So it looks like their relationship is going to be a pretty important part of the story rather than simply having two unrelated protagonists.
What Can You Actually Do?
This is probably the part I’m most interested in.
Obviously, GTA 6 is going to involve the usual GTA stuff — stealing cars, getting into shootouts, driving ridiculously fast, escaping the police and generally causing problems wherever you go.
But the trailers have shown a lot more than that.
You can expect to spend time driving around Vice City, exploring the countryside, taking boats through the waterways, visiting beaches and nightlife spots, and getting involved with various criminal characters and businesses.
There are also robberies and other criminal jobs, with Rockstar showing Jason and Lucia working together on scores. Other characters include bank robber Raul Bautista, drug runner Brian Heder, Vice City businessman Boobie Ike, and music entrepreneur Dre’Quan Priest.
And then there are the random things that make GTA games fun in the first place. One minute you’re supposedly doing an important story mission, and the next you’re driving around looking for something ridiculous to do.
That’s usually where GTA really shines.
The World Looks Much More Alive
One thing that stands out from the footage is just how busy the world looks.
Vice City has packed streets, beaches, clubs, businesses and crowds, while the areas outside the city have a completely different feel. Rockstar has also shown plenty of wildlife and outdoor environments, which should make Leonida feel like more than one giant urban area.
There are also plenty of strange and memorable characters scattered throughout the world. Rockstar’s official material has already introduced people like Cal Hampton, the conspiracy-obsessed friend of Jason, as well as the rap duo Real Dimez, who are trying to turn their social-media fame into a music career.
That mix of serious crime story and completely ridiculous side characters is pretty much classic GTA.
What About GTA Online?
This is one thing worth pointing out: don’t assume everything you know about GTA Online carries over to launch day.
Rockstar is currently describing GTA 6 itself as a single-player experience, and the official launch information currently lists the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar hasn’t announced full details about a GTA 6 online mode in the material currently available.
So for now, the focus is on Jason, Lucia and the single-player world of Leonida.
When Does GTA 6 Come Out?
The current official release date is November 19, 2026.
At launch, the game will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not listed a PC version among the launch platforms.
Pre-loading is scheduled to begin on November 12 for digital purchases, so hopefully anyone planning to play on day one won’t have to spend half the day staring at a download bar.
So, What’s the Big Deal?
At this point, GTA 6 has been anticipated for so long that it’s almost become its own pop-culture event.
But looking at what Rockstar has actually shown, there’s a pretty good reason people are excited. We’re getting a huge new version of Vice City, a much larger surrounding world, two main characters with a shared story, a ton of new locations and what looks like an enormous amount of stuff to simply mess around with.
And honestly, that’s probably the biggest appeal of GTA.
You can follow the story, spend hours exploring Leonida, go looking for trouble, admire the scenery, mess around with cars and boats, or completely ignore whatever mission you’re supposed to be doing.
November 19 can’t come soon enough.
